Through a triumph of the human spirit over enormous hardship and adversity, the island´s most famous prisoner, Nelson Mandela, and his fellow freedom fighters succeeded in turning Robben Island into a symbol of freedom and personal liberation; the island is now a World Heritage Site.

The boat trip between Cape Town and Robben Island provides an opportunity to see Cape Fur seals, Southern Right whales, and Dusky and Heaviside dolphins. But for most, it is the emotional experience of Robben Island that lingers.
